Adventures in travel hacking

In Venice, 2001

One of the downsides (and there are few) to living in Australia is that it costs the equivalent of a house deposit whenever you want to travel overseas with the whole family. Even going to New Zealand would cost us about $10,000 so we’ve stuck to travel within Australia over the past few years. But, recently I re-discovered travel hacking and now, for the first time in years, we’re planning a family adventure overseas.

Name that puppy

I have a confession to make. Lately I’ve had puppy fever. It must be something that hits when you’re no longer pushing out babies of your own, but you still want to cuddle something smaller than a seven year old. Whatever the reason, this week, we had a visit to the RSPCA (for the non-Aussies: Royal Society for the Protection and Care of Animals) and… came home with a puppy 24 hours later.

Discovering hidden treasures in the Scenic Rim

fun times at the Spring Creek Mountain Cafe.

After a week of being sick with the flu, Mother’s Day seemed like the perfect opportunity to get everyone out of the house and go for a drive. I had been itching to go to Queen Mary falls for ages and finally got my wish. So off we went! We took the scenic route through Boonah and meandered past wild lemon trees and trickling creeks, then up the narrow, windy road towards Killarney.

Ipswich Festival is here again!

For those of you not going on the Mums’s Retreat next weekend, there is a fantastic activity planned for Sunday as part of the Ipswich Festival. The Kids Kingdom will be alive with wonder and excitement and Scooby Doo according the brochure. And I just found out a good friend of mine, Barbara Fordham aka Whoa Tilly! Will be performing that afternoon. Here’s a run down of her show!

Environmentally Friendly Poster Paints

enviro kids paints

I don’t normally plug individual products on Mumatopia but am making an exception today as I am just so happy to have found some poster paints for the kids that are environmentally friendly. Enviro Kids Paints are made in Australia and are made from organic pigments and bio-degradable thickeners that are non-toxic and don’t harm the environment.

Mumatopia back at The Handmade Expo

For those who have been missing Mumatopia in their visits to The Handmade Expo, I’ll be back this month with heaps of new stock. The Handmade Expo is on once a month at the Ipswich Turf Club, Brisbane Road, Bundamba. This month’s Expo features performer Soulman O’Gaia. Soul has featured with John Butler, Paul Kelly, Xavier Rudd, Archie Roach and Tex Perkins.

Just one sleep to go till the Mumatopia launch & boutique market

Mumatopia launch

We are putting the finishing touches on preparations for tomorrow’s Mumatopia launch and boutique market. I am madly baking away. Nicole just came over and turned my mop into a work of art (my hair that is) and the kids are sneaking treats from the fridge. Hopefully they won’t sneak too many as we’ll need… [Continue Reading]
